Sea Shanties in KS1
Sea Shanty workshops
In 2023 England will celebrate The Year of the Coast with the entire English coastline now accessible via footpaths and the longest signposted route in the World finally open. A programme of cultural and heritage events will be happening across the country to celebrate this. On Friday 7 th October, Years 1 and 2 took part in some Sea Shanty workshops run by the Southampton Music Hub. They learnt what Sea Shanties are, sang some songs (with actions) and shared ideas of what they might find if they were fishing in the sea off Southampton . Ideas ranged from octopus to mermaids to sunken pirate ships! These ideas will be used to create content for original songs that will be included in a new songbook: The Solent Shanty Sing Songbook. We hope to be involved in vocal workshops next year, which will culminate in a massed performance event, ncluding singers from across Hampshire and some live musicians at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard!
