Core Reading Texts

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The children in year 3/4 have had a great start in reading some of the core reading texts. The reading trees in the classrooms are beginning to ‘leaf out’ with the children’s leaves as they read each of the chosen texts. Read some of the reviews below to see what books they have particularly enjoyed reading.

The Iron Man

The Iron Man is washed up on the shores and manages to put himself together. To begin with he is unwanted because he ruins the farmer’s crops and everyone goes hunting for him. Eventually people come to appreciate him as he saves the day. Read the book to find out how the Iron Man saves the earth.

I recommend this book for people who love adventure books!

I grade it 4/5 stars.

The firework maker’s daughter is about a girl called Lila who wants to be just like her dad, so she goes on a journey to find what makes a good firework maker. Will she be able to find out what makes a good firework maker or not? Read the book to find out how a white elephant and his keeper helps Lila on her journey.

If you like adventure books, I would definitely recommend this book to you!

I would grade this book 4/5 stars.

The Demon Headmaster

Author: Gillian Cross

The main character is called Dinah. She starts at a new school and quickly senses something strange. Dinah decides to investigate with her foster brothers Lloyd and Harvey and find the most surprising thing – a demon! On her journey she finds out things like what it is like to be hypnotized and how important teamwork is. Can Dinah defeat the demon?

I would recommend this book for people who like scary scenes and people who are interested in being hypnotized.

I would grade this book 4.5/5 stars.

The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips

Author: Michael Morpurgo

A girl called Lily lives in a house with her Mother and Grandfather at a time when people had to practice landings from the sea for the invasion of France. They all have to move to Uncle George’s house. When Lily’s beloved cat goes missing Lily goes past the boundaries to find her cat. What will Lily do? This is a great story and is especially exciting when Barry and Lily have a narrow escape from the practise explosions. Although at times it can be sad, the ending will make you smile.

I would grade this book 4.5/5 stars.
