The Highwayman

In North America this week, we have been exploring the poem ‘The Highwayman’ by Alfred Noyes.  We began by spending a lot of time reading the poem, using our BLP resourcefulness to work out the meaning of many unknown words.  We used our deduction skills, as well as dictionaries and iPads, to help us crack the old English language.
After this, we got into groups and took a section of the poem each.  Our task was to try and summarise our part of the poem and explain it to the rest of the class.  These tasks really helped us to gain a deeper understanding of this complex poem.
Today, we have been starting to create character profiles for particular people who feature in the poem.  We have referred to the poem to help us imagine the feelings our chosen character might have about certain points in the poem, and their feelings towards others.
Our next step is to write in role, where we will be creating diary entries recounting particular events from the poem.
This is by no means an easy writing topic, but we are certainly up for the challenge!
