Finding all possibilities

In Year 6 this week, we have been getting our systematic thinking caps on!  Working in a logical and methodical way, we have been getting our teeth stuck into some wonderful problems sourced from the brilliant nrich website.   We focused on ‘Finding all possibilities’ problems, as they require us to work systematically, choosing sensible starting points to ensure that we do not miss any potential answers.  We then had to think carefully about how we will record our answers, as well as pattern-spotting along the way.  Finally, we had to present our evidence in an understandable way to an audience – do our findings make sense?  If we managed to successfully get ourselves out of the ‘Learning Pit’, we then chucked ourselves back by adding extra levels of challenge by tweaking the problem.  It is fair to say that our brains have been thoroughly stretched this week!
