Poetry Slam!

In North America this week we have been diving into the world of poetry! The children have been investigating, reviewing and performing poetry, linked to our Reading Tree poems. At the start of the week, we looked at the famous poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling. Having read this and examined its meaning and themes, we recognised that there were many parallels with BLP (Building Learning Power), especially the need for resilience! We also agreed that many of the messages that the father was passing on to his child were still relevant today.
We then watched a range of poetry performances from the internet, discussing the different techniques and skills used in creating a powerful performance. After this, it was time to collaborate in groups to create our very own renditions, this time using the ‘Jabberwocky’ and ‘Nightmail’ poems. When practise was over, it was time to actually perform! Using a range of techniques, including the careful use of volume, tone and expression, the children entertained their classmates with some memorable performances!
