Maya Glyphs

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

This term, we have been focusing on The Ancient Maya. Year 5 and 6 have learned about glyphs, which are their form of writing, and what some of them represent. In art we even made some of our own, based on modern words! We had to put in some of the techniques that the Ancient Maya used to do the symbols:
– crosshatch
– dots
– circles
– curved lines
– simple drawings

The glyphs are often found in codices, which were books written by the Maya on bark cloth and which have helped historians to understand what Maya life was like. Everyone enjoyed making their own glyphs, though some of us struggled to put in Maya techniques. Even though ours looked more modern than the ancient ones, many people were pleased with their glyphs.
